Ed and Dan Dunn refused to open just another coffee shop. They wanted to set an entirely new standard for coffee: fanatic about freshness, unyielding on quality and rooted in community.
Dunn Brothers Coffee Timeline
1987 – Ed and Dan Dunn procure a 12-kilo Probat roaster and open the first Dunn Brothers Coffee on Grand Avenue in St. Paul, Minnesota.
1989 – Bowing to customer demand, Ed and Dan begin serving brewed coffee and espresso-based beverages.
1991 – Dunn Brothers opens its second location on Lake Street in Minneapolis.
1992 – City Pages readers vote Dunn Brothers the best cup of coffee in the Twin Cities (an honor we’ve received more than 10 times)
1994 – Chris Ellers and Skip Fay partner to become the first Dunn Brothers Coffee franchisees (going on to open five stores between 1995 and 1998).
1998 – Chris and Skip purchase full franchise rights from Ed Dunn and begin to grow the system.
2000 – Dunn Brothers first Fair Trade distribution agreement sets the standard for its markets.
2003 – Dunn Brothers becomes the first Twin Cities coffee chain to offer free wireless internet service. We make our first buying trip to origin – visiting coffee farms in Costa Rica.
2004 – Dunn Brothers opens its first store outside of Minnesota – in Addison, Texas. The new Dunn Brothers IceCrema blended frappe dramatically ups the ante for coffee shop frozen beverages.
2006 – Entrepreneur magazine names Dunn Brothers the #1 coffee franchise in its Top 500 issue (an honor we’ve won 3 times).
2009 – AllBusiness names Dunn Brothers one of America’s “All Star” franchises. Dunn Brothers completes a project to install an aquapulper at a coffee washing station in Kenya’s Gatanga region.
2010 – Dunn Brothers introduces Infinite Black, our one-of-a-kind cold press coffee packaged in a “growler” for take-home enjoyment. Dunn Brothers becomes America’s first coffee chain to announce a significant waste reduction reward by offering a $.25 off all beverages served in a reusable mug or tumbler.
2011 – Dunn Brothers partnership with the UTZ Certified “Good Inside” program begins a three-year journey toward sourcing of 100% certified, sustainably produced coffee.
2012 – Dunn Brothers celebrates our 25th anniversary and launches the Provisions Bakery Café concept bringin fresh baked breads, pastries and handcrafted salads to 12 locations.
